Pattern and Instructions:

Materials Needed:

  • Main Body
  • (2) pieces of fabric, 5" x 12.5"

    (2) pieces of batting, 5" x 12.5"

  • Pocket
  • (2) pieces of fabric, 9.5" x 10"

  • Elastic
  • (1) piece, 5.5" x 1"

  • Binding
  • (1) strip, 2.5" x Width of Fabric (WOF)

  • Inside Cover
  • (1) piece, 13" x 10.5"

    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    1. Quilt the Main Body

Start by layering each 5" x 12.5" fabric piece with an Insulbrite batting piece to provide heat resistance. Quilt these together in your desired pattern, leaving a 1/2" seam allowance around the edges. Crosshatch or straight-line quilting looks clean and classic, but feel free to get creative! Once quilted, set aside.

    2. Prepare the Pocket

Place the two 9.5" x 10" pocket pieces together on both sides. Attach a piece of binding to the top edge of the pocket to give it a polished, finished look. This will create a sturdy and attractive edge for the pocket opening.

    3. Attach the Pocket to the Main Body

Position the pocket on the bottom half of one quilted main body piece, aligning the raw edges along the sides and bottom. Stitch along the sides and bottom edges, leaving the top open to form the pocket.

    4. Assemble the Layers

With the pocket securely attached, layer the second quilted main body piece on top of the first pretty sides together. Layer the inside fabric with the main body and sew around the edges.

    5. Add Binding

Use your 2.5" WOF binding strip to finish the raw edges of the cover. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, press, and sew it onto the cover’s edges using a double-fold binding technique. This step protects the raw edges and adds a professional, polished look to the project.

    6. Finishing touches

Now you can fold the square in half and sew up the bottom and 2/3 up the side.

    Tips for Success:

    • Fabric Choices: Select sturdy fabrics like cotton or canvas for durability. Choose a fun print or a chic solid to reflect your personal style.
    • Quilting Patterns: Stick to simple lines if you're new to quilting. For a more advanced look, experiment with free-motion quilting or decorative stitches.
    • Binding: Take your time with binding to ensure a smooth and neat finish. Use clips to hold it in place while sewing.

    Why You’ll Love This Project:

    • Practicality: Protects your counters and travel bags from heat damage.
    • Customizable: Personalize with fabrics and quilting designs to suit your style.
    • Beginner-Friendly: Simple steps make it a great project for all skill levels.
