Looking for a fun and creative sewing project to add a touch of love to your home? This Valentine Pillow DIY is a great way to use up fabric scraps while practicing simple appliqué techniques. Follow along and create a cozy and charming pillow perfect for the season!

Supplies Needed:

  • Pillow form
  • Scrap batting
  • Washable glue
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter
  • Fabric scraps - (for hearts)
  • Background fabric & backing fabric** (cut to the size of your pillow form)
    • This includes seam allowance, so your pillow fills out nicely!
    • Seam allowance is just over 1/4”
  • Thread (colored thread for a pop of contrast)
  • Sewing machine

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Cut Your Fabrics

  • Cut your background fabric to match the size of your pillow form.

  • Cut two backing pieces for an overlapping flap closure. (Overlap should be about 2"-3".)

Create the Hearts

  • Fold your fabric scraps in half.

  • Freehand cut half-heart shapes along the fold.

  • Open them up, and you’ll have perfectly symmetrical hearts!

Arrange Your Design

  • Place the fabric hearts on your background fabric in a layout you love.

  • Have fun choosing colors that match your home decor!

Secure the Hearts

  • Use a small dab of washable glue in the center of each heart to hold them in place.

  • Once everything is glued, add a layer of batting behind the background fabric.

Stitch the Appliqué

  • Bring your fabric to the sewing machine and stitch around each heart.

    • This can also be done by hand for a more delicate look!

  • Trim any excess batting and square up the pillow top.

Prepare the Pillow Backing

  • Fold over and press the raw edges of the pillow backing pieces.

  • Stitch along the folded edge to prevent fraying.

Assemble the Pillow Cover

  • Layer the pillow top and pillow backing pieces right sides together (RST).

  • Stitch around the entire perimeter of the pillow, using just over a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Trim the corners to reduce bulk and turn the pillowcase right side out.

(Optional) Add Binding

  • If you’d like a colorful finishing touch, add binding around the edges!

  • This can be a great way to tie your color palette together.

Final Step: Insert Your Pillow & Enjoy!

Once your pillow cover is complete, insert your pillow form and fluff it up! Now you have a beautiful handmade Valentine’s pillow to decorate your space or gift to a loved one.

Happy Sewing! ❤️
