Tula Pink Homemade Challenge
Tula Pink is sponsoring a challenge called "Hey, I Made That" with her new collection of fabric HomeMade. Your 60" x 60" quilt make from the new HomeMade by Tula Pink fabric could be selected to qualify for a special juried exhibit at selected venues.
What Is The Purpose?
The challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the quilter/sewist/maker to create with their hands, through the creation of a 60” x 60” quilt featuring 80% of the new Tula Pink HomeMade fabrics and using Aurifil threads. The jury, including Tula Pink, will select 12 quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.”
The 12 selected quilts will have the chance to be part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, TX in October 2020, and the opportunity to win over $10,000 in prizes!

CHALLENGE OVERVIEW
Competition theme: HomeMade
HomeMade - adjective (hōm′mād′): made or prepared at home, locally or by the maker's own efforts.
The humming of the sewing machine, the repetitive motion of a needle passing between the fibers of cloth, the joy of a fresh rotary blade, the gentle steam of a hot iron, the accomplishment of making something with our own hands, these are the things that bind us together. What to some may seem foreign, to us it defines our very existence, that which expresses who we are and amplifies our sense of accomplishment and self-worth. The focus of the HomeMade juried exhibit is to create an item that celebrates our community of makers and all the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” Each quilt will pay tribute to what drives us to create with our hands. It’s about creativity, intention, approach, quality and the pure sense of joy achieved by playing with fabric, threads and finely-crafted tools.
The entries can be art quilts or traditional quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery and/or manipulated fabric, etc. may be used. Twelve quilts will be selected by the jury to be part of the special exhibit.
General entry specifics: Each entrant may submit up to two works to My Favorite Quilt Store. Approximately 80% of each work (60”x 60” quilt) must feature FreeSpirit HomeMade fabric by Tula Pink. We ask that each entrant's finished work include some application of Aurifil Thread too. Please ask that they be specific about the thread color and weights used.
My Favorite Quilt Store will then select one quilt to submit to FreeSpirit. - All Enties must be emailed to My Favorite Quilt Store by September 30, 2020 (Margo@MyFavoriteQuiltStore.com) We will then select one to submit to FreeSpirit for the contest. If you enter you will receive a 10% off coupon to our store to be used for future purchase. You must at least purchase 1 yard of fabric for the quilt from our store to enter.
Size of entries: Each work should be no smaller than 60 inches (152.4cm) square (if a quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, the entrant may still enter their work). Each entry must have a 4” (10cm) finished sleeve or casing sewn to the top back edge of the quilt. Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edge of the sleeve. A cloth label with the entrant’s name, address, email address and telephone number must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.
Jury by FreeSpirit: A jury of experts, including Tula Pink, will select the twelve quilts. The jury’s decision is final. The organizers reserve the right to decide about the quilts for the exhibition upon seeing the actual quilts in person. The organizers reserve the right to refuse any work that does not match the pictures submitted to the jury.
ENTERING THE COMPETITION A juried and judged quilt challenge
Who may enter: The entries may be the work of more than one person as long as proper credit is given to all involved in the actual completion of the quilt. The person entering the quilt must have been involved in making the quilt. Limit 2 entries per person or group to My Favorite Quilt Store. Full-time employees of any associated Jaftex divisions, Aurifil Thread or Quilts, Inc. are not eligible.
Digital images: Digital images must be saved as a high-quality JPEG file. Images must accurately reflect the appearance of the quilt. Any digital image correction, aside from cropping, should be done only to ensure accuracy, and should not artificially enhance the image. Jurors reserve the right to refuse any quilt that differs significantly from the image submitted. We suggest using at least a 3-megapixel camera at the highest resolution. Finished images should be at least 2100 pixels on the longest side.
A special note if using your iPhone to take your photos
iPhones use the .JPG extension in the default file name (and not .jpg). The rotation information is not fully saved in the .JPG extension when viewed in a browser. (In other words, your image will appear rotated on your computer, but then be sideways when viewed after it is uploaded). In order to fully save the rotation, use a 'save as' command after rotating the image in your editing software and then change the extension to .jpg. It is not enough to just rename the file; you must change the extension to .jpg when saving it.
Copyright permission: Entry into the challenge automatically grants copyright permission for the image of the quilt to be used for publication and in advertising and/or publicity for the exhibition, including use on appropriate webpages.
Length of exhibit: The participating works must be available for one year, from September 2020 through September 2021. Quilts will be returned to entrants in September 2021.
Definite venues for the exhibition include: New Venues will be announced
* International Quilt Market 2020— October 24 - 26—Houston, Texas USA
* International Quilt Festival 2020— October 29 – November 1—Houston, Texas USA
Entrants will be notified of any other venues.
YOUR SUBMISSION of imagery and finished work is your agreement that you will abide by the rules and accept the decisions of the jurors and judge.
