Color Value Checker

Upload a photo of your fabric pulls to check if you have enough contrast. The #1 mistake quilters make is choosing fabrics that look different in color but are too similar in value (lightness/darkness).

What is "Value"?

Value is how light or dark a color is, independent of the hue (color). Two fabrics can be completely different colors (red and blue) but the same value — meaning they'll look nearly identical in a quilt pattern.

The Squint Test:

Squint at your fabrics until they blur. If you can still tell them apart, you have good value contrast. If they blur into one mass, you need more contrast.

Pro Tip:

Take a photo on your phone and convert to black & white (or use the grayscale button above). This instantly shows you the value differences without the distraction of color.
